Welcome

On behalf of the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR), we would like to invite you to join us at the 52nd annual ASMR National Scientific Conference (NSC) to be held at the Ballarat Lodge in Ballarat, Victoria, from 17th to 20th November 2013.

The ASMR Board and the Program Committee is pleased to announce that the ASMR NSC for 2013 is entitled:

Silver tsunami: Can medical research ride the ageing wave?

Ageing Well, Ageing Productively is an Australian National Research Priority. In addition, The 2010 Intergenerational Report “Australia to 2050: future challenges” circulated by The Hon. Wayne Swan MP predicts that the ageing population will present significant long-term risks for the country’s economy. The ASMR Board of Directors therefore believes the theme of ageing for the 2013 ASMR NSC is extremely relevant and timely.

The concept of ASMR’s NSCs is based on the highly successful Gordon conferences, which typically bring together a small cluster of researchers in an intimate forum to foster communication, networking and collaboration. This year’s NSC aims to explore various aspects of ageing, with a special emphasis on the prevention of ageing related diseases.

The program committee has assembled a complementary and stimulating mix of scientific sessions, covering key topics of ageing and ageing-related diseases of the brain, bone, reproduction, the heart and skeletal muscle, as well as diabetes, obesity, nutrition, exercise, metabolism and pharmacology.

We aim to bring together world-leading experts from a diverse range of specialties, including scientists, clinicians, dieticians, exercise physiologists and other allied health workers, in a quest to cross-fertilise across specialities and diseases.  The line up of invited speakers is outstanding.

We are honoured to announce two exceptional Orators, in Prof Stephen Simpson (Edwards Orator) and Dr Rafael de Cabo (Firkin Orator). Prof Simpson is Academic Director of the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney and is an ARC Laureate Fellow. Dr de Cabo is Head of Experimental Gerontology at the National Institute of Aging, USA.

If you have an interest in any aspect of ageing we do hope you consider attending the NSC in Ballarat in November.  We very much look forward to seeing you there!
